Description:
Audiences have identified a diverse range of influences in the sound of Storyville, including Talking Heads, the Doors, Pere Ubu, Nick Cave, Captain Beefheart and early Velvet Underground. The songs have been described as dark, strange and blues-based but finally any categorisation eludes people as the sound of Storyville is a unique combination of African, Latin, jazz, blues and rock.

The line up is piano, keyboards, trumpet, bass, drums and male and female vocals. Typically, the songs are strongly narrative based and often contain a dramatic dialogue between male and female characters in the stories. Increasingly, the band aspire to a greater theatrical language in the music; the female vocalist is a professional dancer, the male vocalist has a background in theatre production and video projection will become an important dimension in realising the complex worlds of the songs. An associate artist of the band and a key player in its inception is revered as a master drummer in Nigeria, and brings a formidable talent to the rhythm section.

The band's material is original, created from stories ranging from bushwhackers in the American Civil War, dissenting preachers in Puritan England, Orisha gods in West Africa and Cuba, to witches and devils and rearrangements of classic Robert Johnson songs such as Judgement Day and Come on in my Kitchen.
